Fans globally are grieving for Liam Payne, the ex-One Direction member who sadly passed away yesterday at just 31 years old.
An autopsy has now disclosed the official reason for the singer’s death.
Payne died on October 16 after he fell from his third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After being taken to a local morgue, medical experts conducted an autopsy to find out how he died.

A report from National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 stated that Payne died due to “polytrauma, internal and external bleeding.”
The case is being treated as a “suspicious death,” although it seems that Payne was alone when he fell. His girlfriend Kate Cassidy had left Argentina two days earlier.
The report also mentioned that Payne was “going through some kind of outbreak due to substance abuse.” Authorities found drugs and alcohol in his hotel room.
Final hours: drugs, ”trashed” hotel & call
In a disturbing call made just before his death, hotel staff expressed worries about his actions saying he was wrecking his room while under the influence of alcohol and drugs; they warned that his life “may be in danger” and asked police to come quickly.
Payne had been open about battling addiction before; he admitted being hooked on “pills and booze” during One Direction’s peak.
“In the band… we were often locked in our rooms because we got so big,” he said during a podcast interview back in 2021. “What’s there? A mini-bar! So I thought I’d have my own party which lasted many years… then you realize how long you’ve been drinking like ‘Wow that’s ages.’”
In May of this year (2023), Payne claimed he was sober for over three months after rehab & felt “amazing.”

He became famous as part of One Direction—one of history’s most successful boy bands—alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson Niall Horan & Zayn Malik after forming on The X Factor back in 2010.
One Direction’s first four albums all hit number one on Billboard US charts—a record—and included hits like “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Story of My Life,” & “Live While We’re Young.”
They became teen idols adored by countless fans while going on four world tours together until their hiatus began in 2016 when Payne started a solo career.

“He was my favorite,” said Camila Martínez outside the hotel where she mourned with tears according to New York Times .“My heart broke when they split up; their music helped me through tough times.”
Many artists who worked with him also expressed sadness over losing him!
“I’m shocked right now,” musician Charlie Puth wrote remembering him as one of first major artists he’d collaborated with saying ,“I can’t believe he’s gone.”
“I’m heartbroken,” wrote Rita Ora who worked alongside him too stating ,“He had such kindness inside; I’ll never forget it! Working together brought me joy both off stage or not . This news breaks my heart sending love prayers towards family friends.”
His former bandmates released a statement today:
“We’re completely devastated by hearing about Liam’s passing,” they said according Hollywood Reporter .“When everyone can process this loss more will be shared but right now we need time grieve our brother whom we loved dearly—the memories will always be cherished forever! Our thoughts go out towards family friends plus fans loving alongside us—we miss you terribly!”
